Gambesons (or achetons / aketons)
Still around for a large proportion of the century.
For prices, and other information, contact us until the Early Medieval page is active.
Grand Assiette doublet (pourpoint)
As mentioned in the section on extant padding, it's now believed that the pourpoint of Charles
de Blois is a civilian doublet, and not padded armour at all. However, as there are at least a
couple of contemporary illustrations showing similarly cut garments being used by men waving
swords around (!), I'm including it here.
NB - due to the very complex cut of this item, it will only be available as a fully bespoke
piece.
Prices given are for a version made in plain cotton / linen fabrics, although other fabrics can be
used at an extra cost (for example, reproductions of medieval silk brocades, silk velvets, leather,
etc) - contact us with your requirements for a quotation. The price in purple is for a cloth button
fastening, as per the original (lots!) - the price in blue is for a front fastening of hand made brass or
iron hooks and eyes or points. Reproduction buckles can be used for an extra cost of £20.

Coat Armours / jupons
The padded coats worn over armour towards the latter part of the century, and into the fifteenth.
Several different cuts, the padded coat of Charles VI and the heraldic coat of The Black Prince are
both 'coat armour's, although they are quite different in style. Usually depicted with brightly
coloured outers (red and green seem to have been very popular).

Padded Jacks
Late medieval padded jacks - usually white (as in contemporary descriptions).
Stitching patterns vary (usually going in at the waist - the difference being in how a sharp the
incline is, and how close together the lines of stitching.
NB - a padded jack should not be confused with and arming doublet. A jack is armour in itself, and
is designed to be worn alone, or with a small amount of armour such as a breastplate, or arm
chains - it is not designed to be worn under a full plate harness.
Prices given are for a version made in plain cotton / linen fabrics, white or off-white (let us know if
you prefer one or the other). Colours, or materials such as leather or pigskin, or deerhide can also
be used. Prices for leather outers vary with the cost of the material - contact us for a current price.
Points or hooks and eyes are included in the price as the fastening. Hand made reproduction
buckles can be used for an extra £20, or buttons (lots, in the 14th century style), for an extra £50.
Burgundian style puffed sleeves can be added to any of the versions for around £50 (machined) to
£100 (hand sewn).

Arming Doublets
Precisely what they sound like - doublets for wearing under plate armour.
They can be made up of layers of wool, linen or cotton canvas, or cotton wadding, with a linen
outer and lining.
Arming doublets can be made in just about any colour, although red, green, black, and grey seem to
have been very popular.
NB - do not confuse with a padded jack - an arming doublet is not heavily padded, and cannot be
worn as stand alone armour - it is designed to form a foundation for a plate harness.
Although we can make arming doublets to standard sizes, we strongly recommend that they are
made to measure.
Prices given are for a version made in plain cotton / linen fabrics.
Materials like leather or pigskin, or deerhide can also be used. Prices for complete leather outers
vary with the cost of the material - contact us for a current price.
Points or hand made brass or iron hooks and eyes are included in the price as the fastening. Hand
made reproduction buckles can be used for an extra £20, or buttons for an extra £50.
Point holes are included at the waist (for attachment of mail skirt). These can be left out on
request. We can also insert additional points in any position, and without limit, at a cost of £1 per
pair (hand sewn). Should you wish to insert your own additional point holes, we can supply you
with the internal re-enforcement rings. (Insertion of eyelets by a customer would not invalidate
guarantees, but we could obviously not be held responsible for damage resulting from customer
fitted eyelets.)
Burgundian style puffed sleeves can be added to any of the versions for around £50 (machined) to
£100 (hand sewn).
Prices in purple are for gusseted versions, prices in blue are for un-gusseted versions. (NB -
un-gusseted versions are not suitable for wearing with plate legs that attach to the doublet - we can
take no responsibility for damage occurring to the armour or arming doublet should this advice not
be followed.
